This was a source of red scoria rock, which was used for the construction of the pukao "hat", visible on the heads of so many moai statues. It is in the proximity of Hanga Roa town, so you can simply walk out to it from your hotel. Puna Pau is a nice little place with green hills around and trees, trails. There you will also find a number of huge red scoria boulders. Some have carvings on them.
