Ahu Nau NauYour location: Welcome! (Main page) / Ahu Nau Nau
It is an archaeological site with restored moai statues. You can find it at Anakena Beach on the northern part of Easter Island. This ahu was partly buried in the sand and the statues were fallen. Cracks and erosion signs are visible on the rocks. In 1980 archaeologist Sergio Rapu Haoa has conducted restoration work at the site and today we can admire it in its original form. Today, the site at Nau Nau is one of the most well preserved ahu sites. 7 statues are found here: 4 larger moai with topknots (pukao), 2 medium size ones and the seventh is rather the remains of a body. Unfortunately one of the medium statues has no head and the last one is less than half a body. Interestingly the pukao are very well fitted on the moai heads. Archaeologists have found an almost complete coral eye. The iris was made of a separate red volcanic scoria stone, which was inlaid in a circular cavity inside the coral eye. Nau Nau is worth visiting, as it is one of the most beautiful places on the island. Petroglyphs are also found here. They represent animals and a legendary lizard man, which the islanders believed to have come from another world. Very close to Ahu Nau Nau is Ahu Ature Huke. Location on the map
