Ahu AkiviYour location: Welcome! (Main page) / Ahu Akivi
This is a place located slightly northeast of the Vaka Kipo volcano, southwest of the Maunga Terevaka, part of the Rapa Nui National Park. 7 huge moai are lined up on a platform facing the ocean. It's worth visiting an photographing. This is among the main moai sites of Rapa Nui. This site was restored in 1960 by American archaeologist William Mulloy and Chilean colleague Gonzalo Figueroa García-Huidobro. The site consists of high moai statues that aren't just heads but are build from the waistline to the top. These don't have "hats" or pukao topknots. The statues are located on a platform which is surrounded by a sloped pavement. These moai are not among the most beautiful ones, because they have signs of degradation, however they are mostly intact (unlike others on the island which were overthrown and even lack large pieces). You can reach this site easily form Hanga Roa on the main graveled road. It's best by car, but you could also go on foot, if you are a trained walker. It could take half the day from Hanga Roa and back and it would not be an exciting hike. Location on the map
